To Gustav or not to Gustav
Wednesday 08-27-2008 11:05am CT
Now is the time for all Louisianians to make preperations (if you have not already) for tropical storm (hurricane) Gustav. Mayor Holden and our Office of Emergency Preparedness held a joint news conference this morning and without a doubt the most important information talked about was : (1) personal accountability. Make sure YOU have enough supplies (3 days worth of food , water and medicine (if applicable). (2) Make sure YOU have an evacuation plan. DO NOT expect the government to be able to evacuate everyone if it looks like Gustav will impact us directly ! (3) Focus on the entire cone where officials say Gustav could hit, not just one particular track because it is too early to tell which track it will take. (4) All LOCAL residents, please get your supplies early and that way we can stay off the streets if needed. Remember, Monday will be a holiday and there is the distinct possibility of additional traffic coming thru our area. If that happens, the last thing we will need will be local citizens clogging up the roads because we waited untill the last minute to get our hurricane supplies. All that having been said, guys and girls we know the drill, this is not our first rodeo. GOVERN YOURSELVES ACCORDINGLY !!!
Opening night

The Democrats kicked off their convention last night in grand style. Ailing Mass. Senator Ted Kennedy stole the show (my opinion only) by making an address when many thought he would not even be able to attend. Michele Obama delivered a good speech but I was bothered by the complete lack of any mention regarding her faith and the role God has played in getting her (and her family) to where they are today. Of course in hindsight I have to wonder if that was not planned in the wake of the ugly Jeremiah Wright episode. I can easily see the handlers and speech writers saying "oh no, do not even think of mentioning God or anything like that because we cannot take the chance of reviving that whole mess". However, that being said, I think they missed a great opportunity to reach out to Evangelicals who may be undecided. Both sides will have to have some sort of crossover vote in order to win and opportunities like last night will be limited before the election takes place. Tonight should be interesting as well as Hillary Clinton gets her chance to address the convention and the nation. How she fares as far as uniting the Democrat party could well be the deciding factor for the Dems this fall.
Another one ???

The magnitude of the problem on I-12 was underscored again this morning. Before I was able to finish telling you we were going to talk about the rash of wrecks on I-12 there was another one ! We had a number of possible solutions offered, most of them long term solutions. I found it interesting that so many of the callers found something to blame other than those who actually drive on the interstate. I think (my opinion only) the biggest thing we can do (until we get a loop or a double decker or more lanes) is exercise a little common sense. Slow down, leave more space between you and the car ahead of you and exercise a little more patience and courtesy. Short of that, the only other short term solution is to put police officers out there on a full time basis. It would be expensive, but it would save LIVES ! But how sad is that, when we need to place police officers on the side of the road (permanently) because we as Americans refuse to obey the rules of the road ? Says something about us does'nt it ???
