The Louisiana Senate is the next stop for a proposed bill banning the sale of nitrous oxide to the general public.

The state House passed House Bill 64 on Tuesday by a unanimous vote of 103-0.

Nitrous oxide is often abused for recreational purposes, resulting in addiction, injury, and death.

The bill makes exceptions for dentists' offices and other business applications.

Louisiana would be the first state to pass such a prohibition on nitrous oxide. Violations could result in a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
