The 2023 football season is over for Northwestern State University.

The school in northwestern Louisiana cancelled the rest of its season on Thursday, two weeks after safety Ronnie Caldwell was shot and killed.

NSU President Dr. Marcus Jones said in a statement that it's in the best interest of players, coaches, and staff to pause and take time to mourn, to heal, and to support Caldwell's family.

Head coach Brad Laird resigned due to what he called the emotional burden of the 21-year-old player's death.
