State education officials are moving ahead with a plan to boost reading skills among Louisiana's 3rd and 4th graders.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education unanimously voted on Wednesday to pass the state superintendent's plan to help kids who fell behind their reading levels during the pandemic.

The proposal originally required 20 hours of summer remediation for students who failed an end-of-the-year screening. Students who didn't complete those hours would repeat the grade.

The board approved an amended version of the superintendent's plan.
