Hermine Forms In Far Eastern Atlantic

A system off the coast of Africa grew strong enough on Friday to become Tropical Storm Hermine.

Hermine is not a threat to the mainland United States and is forecast to be relatively short-lived, possibly dissipating by early next week.

The storm could bring two to four inches of rain to the Canary Islands over the weekend, with some isolated amounts up to six inches possible.

"This rainfall could cause some flash flooding in areas of higher terrain," said the National Hurricane Center.

With the naming of Hermine, the tropical depression moving through the Caribbean Sea would get the name Ian if it develops as expected.
