An East Baton Rouge judge is allowing some people on probation to get vaccinated against COVID-19 in place of court-mandated service hours.

Court documents released yesterday show Judge Fred Crifasi allowed two different offenders the option of taking the vaccine instead of finishing their community service hours.

Prosecutors say judges offering alternatives to community service is not new, with blood donations an example of past substitutions.

Officials say anyone not comfortable with the vaccine option can always decline and keep their original penalty.
