Martha White, Who Spurred Baton Rouge Bus Boycott, Dies

The woman known for her critical role in the Baton Rouge Bus Boycott has passed away.

Martha White died over the weekend at the age of 99. She was 23 years-old in 1953 when she refused to move from a seat reserved for whites only on a Baton Rouge bus.

Another black woman joined White and when police were called the driver was informed White was within her rights in accordance with a new city council ordinance to desegregate buses.
