A person is in jail after a child was killed in a wreck on Scenic Highway Tuesday morning.

Officials say the crash happened jut before 7:30 a.m. on Highway 61 south of Highway 964.

According to reports, Treasure Charles was driving south on Highway 61 when, for unknown reasons, hit the back of Lexus in the southbound lane that had suffered engine failure.

Police say 11-year-old Wayne Ford was the rear passenger of the Lexus and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck.

Ford was pronounced dead at the scene, while Charles sustained minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

Authorities say impairment is not suspected as a factor in the wreck, but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers nonetheless.

Charles has been booked on charges of negligent homicide, negligent injuring, and careless operation.
